DC State Fair
3RD PLACE ICE CREAM: Wild blackberry cheesecake. This egg-less ice cream was inspired by recipes from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home, a fantastic cookbook that I stumbled upon at Hill's Kitchen. Coincidentally, Jeni's on 14th St NW opens today.
I foraged for wild blackberries on public land in DC earlier this summer and preserved them as freezer jam in order to make this ice cream. I would like to thank the Multidisciplinary Arts team at The Sanctuaries for providing valuable constructive feedback on a previous batch. Additionally, you might notice that this ribbon is further decorated with a couple small orange spots near the bottom, my "award" for wearing the ribbon on my wrist while eating a half smoke from Ben's Chili Bowl at the fair. Oops. *smirk*
2ND PLACE PICKLE: Spicy dilly yardlong beans. Yup, the same ones I wrote about previously. I love growing "Chinese Red Noodle" yardlong beans in my garden and I will definitely grow them again next summer. I think they might be even more delicious pickled than eaten fresh.
My spiced grape jelly didn't place, but hey, you can't win them all. Most importantly, I had fun challenging myself with new recipes...that was the point after all. Many thanks to all of the organizers and volunteers clearly who worked so very hard to make the DC State Fair a success.
