Recommended books for holiday gifts
I own a lot of gardening books. And cookbooks. No really, did I say "a lot?" I mean, A LOT. Here are some of my favorites. I think they would make great gifts for the gardeners and cooks in your life.
Favorite Vegetable Gardening Book: The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener by Niki Jabbour. If I was only allowed to have one vegetable gardening book, it would be this one. This book has it all: garden designs, construction plans, techniques, and lots of thoughtful advice for growing a variety of vegetables all year round. The author lives and gardens in Halifax, Nova Scotia, so you know that if she can produce a bountiful harvest from her outdoor garden in January, we can do the same here in DC.
Favorite for Appreciating the Beauty of Edible Plants: The Edible Front Yard by Ivette Soler. Not everyone thinks that vegetable gardens are attractive. HOA contracts and local laws may even prohibit front yard vegetable gardens, considering them an eyesore. It doesn't have to be this way: with a little bit of creativity and resourcefulness, gardeners can grow dinner and create stunning outdoor spaces at the same time.
Favorite Vegetarian Cookbook: World Vegetarian by Madhur Jaffrey. I'm an omnivore, not a vegetarian, and this is my favorite cookbook. My copy of this book is tattered and stained, with creased pages that tend to open themselves to my most loved recipes. Organized by main ingredient, the recipes span the globe. Need a new take on green beans? This cookbook has 8 delicious green bean recipes to choose from. The author also provides suggestions for dishes that compliment each other as well as appropriate substitutions for when an ingredient is unavailable.
Favorite for Cooking with the Whole Family: At The Farmers' Market with Kids by Leslie Jonath and Ethel Brennan. This colorful cookbook is bursting with kid-friendly recipes that will please adults' and children's palates alike, plus a few fun crafts. I love that the book is organized by season of the year, informing us when these foods are at their freshest and tastiest. Still not convinced? Try the chocolate beet cupcakes...they're mind-blowing.
