Spring 2018 plant sales

Happy Spring everyone! It is spring, right? *checks the calendar, then looks out the window at yesterday's snowfall...sigh* For reference, my post about last spring's sales can be found here.

Both the Maryland Native Plant Society and the Virginia Native Plant Society announce spring native plant sales. Shopping these sales is a great way to support local environmental activism while building habitat for good bugs in your garden.

The National Arboretum is hosting its Native Plant Sale on March 24, 8:30am-2pm. Community Forklift's Garden Party is also on March 24, 9am-3pm. I figure I only get to pick one of these to check out in the morning because I plan to attend March for Our Lives at noon.

April brings us the American Horticultural Society's Spring Garden Market on April 13 and 14 at the beautiful River Farm. Mount Vernon's Historic Plant and Garden Sale begins April 21 (continuing through May 20). Lots of gardening events are happening on the weekend of April 28 and 29 including the the Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild's Plant and Herb Sale and the National Arboretum's Garden Fair and Plant Sale.

In May, we have Flower Mart at the National Cathedral, May 4 and 5. Earth Sangha's Open House and Spring Plant Sale is May 6. Green Spring Gardens' Spring Garden Day is on May 19.

Last week, my mother brought me this gift of Atamasco lilies, a Southeast native wildflower that is rare and endangered in our area. They don't usually bloom around here until April or May, but these had been growing in her Savannah, GA garden. I'm very excited to add these to my collection and I hope I can propagate them to eventually share with fellow gardeners. (Obviously, I took this photo a few days ago, before the snow.)
