My backyard garden sure looks a lot happier after Tuesday's thunderstorm. My rain barrel is full once again.
The vines are really starting to cover the remesh trellises. The birdhouse gourd was the first vine to reach the top.
The tromboncino squash was the first to be productive. The immature fruit looked spectacular with the blossom still attached.
We've also been enjoying cherry tomatoes, chile peppers, basil, and parsley. I've been making a lot of simple summer veggie salads with the additions of a store-bought cucumber (my 'Lemon' cucumbers are still growing), apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper, and sometimes feta cheese.
Unexpectedly, my backyard garden produced a "furry fruit" this week.
I saw this little dude multiple times over several days. He was always friendly, but hungry. He had no tags and he kept trying to come inside my house. After contacting the Humane Rescue Alliance, I made the most compassionate choice for his welfare: I took him to the New York Avenue shelter so that he could receive appropriate medical care and be adopted. My husband and I share our home with 2 cats already, so we are unable to care for him. If you are looking for an animal companion, you know where to go.
