On a whim, I bought one tomatillo seedling this spring and planted it at the end of my community garden plot. I had never grown tomatillos before because I didn't think I had enough space...they grow to be huuuuge. And has it ever grown! It's probably 4 feet wide and tall now. It's even got the start of a tomatillo on it:
I'm also growing a tomatillo cousin, ground cherries. While tomatillos are used for savory dishes, ground cherries are sweet. When they fall to the ground beneath the plants, they are ripe and ready to eat. Just peel off the papery husk and enjoy.
